Obesity and being overweight is currently the most primary health concern in the middle east, moreso in Dubai. It’s such a huge concern that they’re government offers a gram of gold for each kilogram they (Emirati kids) shed. Now if that isn’t motivation enough, i don’t know what is. Earlier this year, a cross-sectional survey was constructed amongst 661 adolescents by Nutricion Hospitalaria in Dubai. The study revealed that 27.2% of males and 20.5% of females were obese and 18.5%(males), 13.1% females were overweight. Statistics also revealed that one in three children in Dubai is either overweight or obese, which is understandable considering the amount of junk food so easily available in the country, the complete lack of any form of strenuous physical activity and the high temperatures which limit outdoor activities and lastly, wealth.
With all these factors and more contributing to weight-gain, you’ll need all the inspiration you can get.
1. Consult your doctor
“Consult a physician before starting any exercise program” Gyms, weight-loss reality shows, exercise videos, etc all have similar disclaimers (though we tend to ignore them most of the time). Even better if they’re a specialist (physical therapists or exercise physiologist). This is really important, it would be really dangerous not to,actually. This would help ensure that there are no underlying health issues that could impede your exercise regimen. Or possibly cause a fatal injury…and you don’t want that now, do you? ‘course not! Even if you’re sure you’re good to go, there’s no harm in having a medical check up and consultation. If anything, you’ll benefit from it.
2. Set A Goal
You will need to set a target for yourself in order to have a concrete mindset (what you want to achieve, how you’ll achieve it and when you’ll achieve it). Its okay to set yourself a really hard-to-achieve target because it’ll only motivate you to work hard at it and be more dedicated.
Also, don’t beat yourself up if you end up not achieving your objective on the deadline, the body works in mysterious ways so it might be that your body is just slowly getting used to being more active, physically. The important thing is that you remain determined and consistent.
3. Minimize the junk food as much as possible.
Even better? Be a vegetarian! Easy weight-loss! If that doesn’t work out, you could always switch back to being a meat-eater (which is actually healthier considering the vital nutrients meat contains) . Seriously though, junk food is just really high in calories and low in nutritional value. And you’ll have to agree with me that the last thing you need right now is more calories (actually you don’t need it at all!). I don’t mean you should totally stop eating calorie-dense food, its okay to give yourself little treats here and there to keep you going. But you’ll need to drastically minimize it at least until you start seeing results
4.Exercise/Physical activity
Its extremely important that you start slowly with this and gradually increase the intensity because your body will probably not be used to doing strenuous workouts so it’ll need time to adapt to the changes and because you are looking for long-term results rather than short-term.
With that said, i suggest you start making a few minor changes to your daily lifestyle to increase your physical activity. For example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, doing more household chores or even yard work. Then you can proceed to taking walks, jogging or moderately intense workouts Even if you’re busy with school, work, whatever there are multiple ways you can incorporate these changes in your weekly schedule. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” So as long as you’re dedicated and consistent, there’s no way you won’t succeed.
5.Seek for support
This might not seem that important but it actually really is. How? Get your family and friends involved, talk to them about your struggles, maybe even invite them for a workout session and you’ll know how, trust me. They’ll be the ones to get you back on track when it you begin to falter and start losing your motivation. And they’ll be there to console and motivate you when things start to get really tough, which they will (but it’ll be worth it).
6.Make It fun
Most people tend to get carried away by the dynamics of losing weight that they end up forgetting that they could make it fun and enjoy the process as well as achieve they’re objective. If you’re that person, please understand that it’ll actually be more effective if you try to enjoy it as well. Don’t always choose an activity simply because it burns the calories, you could also do activities you find pleasurable. There must be atleast one physical activity that you could see yourself enjoying. Right. Now take that and make it the foundation of your workout regimen and voila you’re having fun and shedding the pounds!
These are all you need to do. Follow these tips consistently and you’ll see immense changes within a month. You’ll feel better, look better, think better, shoot you’ll be better! A better, healthier, happier version of yourself. How great would that be? And all you gotta do is work towards it. Au revoir!
