Four benefits of fruits to your health

Fruits are the mature reproductive bodies of a plant. They are usually very delicious and lovely to eat.

They are a recreational type of meal, full of nutrients and they are recognized as healthy to eat and consume.

There are many different fruits including; apples, oranges, mangoes, grapes, bananas, durians, melon, figs, cherries, berries, currants, appricots, papayas, lychee, pomegranates and kiwi fruits, all of which provide benefits to our health.

It is recommended to take at least two cups of fruits every day.

We are now going to look at some benefits of fruits to our health.

1. Fruits help fight diseases

Fruits are made up of a nutrient called vitamins which are vital for the body and help cells to grow and repair themselves. They are vital components for the immune system to work properly.

Fruits are one of the only foods where vitamins are present in abundance and they also contain another compound called antioxidants which help fights diseases- in the body and repair oxidation damage in cells (including cells of the immune system).

2. Fruits can help prevent constipation, gas and bloating

Constipation happens when food is stuck and cannot move smoothly or properly through the digestive system. It gets stuck in the intestines so no more food can be digested causing your belly to swell.

This can be prevented by eating fruits which are rich with a nutrient called fiber.

Fiber is mostly not digested by the digestive system, but it prevents constipation by moving through the digestive system smoothing out the walls of the intestine so food can pass through without any difficulties.

Bloating is happens when gas (either swallowed or released from bacteria in the stomach) trapped in the digestive system causes the belly to swell because food is stuck and cannot move. Again fiber in fruits smoothens out the digestive system so food can move easily and gas is easily removed.

3. Fruits help prevent and cure cancers

Fruits contain chemicals such as triterpenoids and flavonol that have been proven to act strongly against some cancers.

Scientists from the  American Association for Cancer Research, say that eating apples which are rich in flavonol, reduces the risk of pancreatic cancer by twenty-three percent.

4. Fruits can help reduce weight

Some fruits like apples contain a special type of fiber, which is soluble. This fiber sticks with fats in the intestine, thereby lowering cholesterol, hence less fat is made and stored in the body, so you do not put on weight.
