Lay Down the Law
Just as sometimes, family and friends have to stage an intervention to help a person who is in trouble in some way, you are going to have to get tough with your teenager. But you can be tough without necessarily being harsh and this is the key. Have a talk with them to make them understand your concerns and make sure they understand that being overweight is extremely unhealthy for them. Let them know that you are in this together and you should probably attach some form of reward to keep them motivated. Note though, that you must be able to get your teenager to internally commit to the goal of getting fit. The success of this step will underpin the success of the next few steps.

No Junk Food
Junk food is public enemy number one when you’re working with a teenager to get them into shape. The problem with junk food is that even tough it usually tastes so good, it has been called “junk” for a reason. These foods are packed with calories and in some cases unhealthy types of fat and sugar. On the top of the “no eat list” should be popular snacks like chocolate, fast food and carbonated drinks.
You can’t really control what your teenager eats when they are out of the house and hanging out with friends so this could be a concern. But here’s an idea: you could talk to your teenager’s friends to make sure they are willing to help out by not eating or hangin out at fast food joints, at least for a while.

Devise a workout plan
Let’s face it, the average teenager is probably not going to be motivated or disciplined enough to make a plan and stick with it. You’re going to have to help them devise a plan that is effective but not too demanding. The hard part is, there will be times when you will have to workout alongside your teenager to encourage them and lend some meaningful moral support so prepare yourself mentally.
-
Enroll them in Organized Sport
Organized sports like soccer are excellent for weight loss and for keeping fit. There are a number of great options for organized sports that you could enroll your teenager in but be sure to choose one that hey actually have an interest in. The benefit of organized team sports is that you have a lot of fun while your body gets a great workout at the same time. For teenagers this is important as workout routines tend to get monotonous and boring very quick.

Get gym membership or a personal trainer
If you can afford it, a personal trainer is actually a very good idea. Personal trainers are usually very knowledgeable and will help to motivate and guide your teenager even at times when they don’t feel like following the plan. If you’re perhaps too busy to personally follow up on their progress, having a personal trainer for your teenager will ensure that they stick to the plan and keep on making progress.
