Team building activities are fun ways of getting people to bond and work together. If you’ve been cracking you brain for ideas, here are a few good ones:
1. THE GREAT ORACLE
This involves three players in a line facing the audience. The player at the back stands, the one in front of him/her (meaning the middle player) kneels and the player right in front sits cross legged. This way, they look like a totem pole. The three players in this order are called ‘the great oracle’ and it can answer any question. The audience can now ask anything and each member of the oracle will answer with using one word. The words should complement each other to form a single answer.
Tip- the oracle should listen carefully to the questions and answer very precisely. They may also use their arms and even change their voice when speaking to indicate their divinity. After they are done answering, their hands can go down so that the audience knows they have answered the question.
This could be funny.
2. AT THE BUS STOP
In this activity, players act out a scene at the bus stop. Each player is given time to imagine a character and a reason why the character would be at the bus stop. The motive of the game is to see how different characters react to each other. Encourage the players to make it more interesting, while keeping it at a realistic level. By this I mean, let the players broaden their imagination as to let their characters meet other characters and interact. You could build a whole story!
Tip- For players who may not have much ideas, you may suggest something they could build on. Encourage the players to focus on developing a scene that leads to more interesting scenes.
3. ONE WORD STORY
In this game, players form a circle and tell a story. Each player gets to say just a word which is completed by the next player and the next until all the players have told a story. For example, player 1 says ‘once’, player 2 says ‘upon’, player 3 says ‘a time’.
Tip- Players should try to be a little fast to make the story flow and more exciting. Players should avoid thinking about the story because they only get to say one word. The key is to listen attentively to other team players and be ready. Do not be scared to use weird words. Just go with the flow and keep it fun and simple. After the game, players may say how they thought the story was going to end initially. They may even make drawings of the story.
4. DRAMA
This is a creative building activity. Teams are given topics to act out, perhaps 5-10 minutes. Players may choose to use a video camera and make it a movie like form or live performance. The teams can be given 2 hours to work on their script, or develop their story if they are allowed to choose their own topics. The time can be extended if necessary but do not give too much time so that team members would feel the need to think fast and act fast.
Tip- Players may choose to do commercials, or act something with a good vs evil theme, etc.
5. DROP THE EGG
This is a pretty competitive team building activity. In this game, the sub teams (four members in each or more) are given the task of developing a device that will enable them drop an egg from a specified height without breaking it. The sub groups are given straw, masking tape and raw eggs. Before dropping their eggs, each sub team is allowed a minute for the presentation of their device. Then the demonstration. The audience may applaud or groan depending on the results.
Tip- Each sub team may work at a different location and should not go to the location of the other sub team. The dropping zone will be marked out on a carpet or grass. The height from which the eggs will be dropped will be determined by the trainer.
The team that receives the loudest applause wins.
Time- 40 minutes
6. PUZZLE PIECE SEARCH
You can do this with an already made puzzle or use a large unwanted poster and cut into different pieces depending on the number of players. Hide the pieces of the puzzle in different locations while the players are outside. There should be table or work area where the pieces can be reassembled. Each player is tasked to look for the pieces and bring them back to the table and fit it with the other pieces. The players get rewarded for each piece they find and fit rightly. They may go back and look for more pieces until the puzzle is complete.
Have you tried any of these out before? They are so much fun and will help you build a great team.
