When we are stressed, our bodies gets affected, and this involves our organs. The brain releases what are commonly referred to as the ‘fight or flight’ hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones raise blood pressure, increase heart rate, and constrict blood vessels.

In acute stress, cortisol and adrenaline are cleared after the immediate danger has been taken care of. However, constant release of these hormones, as in cases of chronic stress may exacerbate pre-existing respiratory and gastrointestinal problems such as asthma and ulcers respectively. They also increase the risk for cardiovascular conditions such as angina, myocardial infarction and stroke.

The good news is that for the most part, you may not need any advanced medication to take care of feelings of stress; exercise has proven to be a very effective means of treating stress and people who are under immense stress can benefit from simply going for a brisk walk or doing some other form of exercise. Read on to see more details on how exercise can help to relieve stress:

1. Research has shown that stress levels for physically active people are way lower than those for people living a sedentary life. This is because , which have the following effects in the body:

2. Exercise leads to release of endorphins including norepinephrine. Endorphins released during exercise also act as natural painkillers and sedatives and thus, facilitate sleep.

3. Endorphins function to elevate your mood and improve appetite. They also stimulate different sex hormones and improve sexual performance.

4. Ever noticed how easy it is to forget things when you are stressed? This is because stress reduces the capability of certain vital areas of the brain including the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory. The release of hormones such as  norepinephrine helps to reverse this, and improve memory, learning and cognitive functions.

5. Exercise improves blood circulation ,lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and strengthens the heart. According to research, people who engage in regular exercise are at a 35% less risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

6. One of the most effective ways of losing excess fat is by engaging in physical activity. When you exercise, your body uses up energy including excess glucose. You get to stay in shape and live healthy!

The great irony with exercise is that it temporarily releases the very hormones that induce stress. However, this is only temporary and in most people, hormonal levels go back to normal right afterwards. Over all, regular exercise helps keep you in shape, boosts your self confidence, and lowers your stress levels. So take a walk, go cycling or do whatever physical exercise that you love; just be sure to get some regular exercise.
